Middle-High School Program

About

The Lowcountry Montessori School Secondary Program (middle and high school) represents and integration of South Carolina core standards and educational requirements, the most current research on the developmental needs of adolescents, the Montessori approach to education, research-based learning theory and teaching methods, and the predictions of the skills needed to lead a productive life of continuous learning and cooperation.

We Flourish

Consistent with all Beaufort County schools, Lowcountry Montessori seeks to provide the environment and experience that will allow students to flourish academically to the point of exceeding state standards of academic achievement; however, our overarching goal as educators is to help our students develop into independent, responsible, critical thinkers, and compassionate individuals. This coincides with Maria Montessori’s vision for education as a system that allows students to physically access the world, and in turn, to develop into charitable stewards of their environment and community.

Adolescents operate at a crucial stage in developing the social skills necessary to acquire a true capacity for compassion, empathy and understanding – the foundation for peaceful dialogue and cooperation that is the vision of Montessori. Nonetheless, very few Montessori Secondary programs exist - let alone public programs. This is why Lowcountry Montessori School acknowledges its secondary program as the cornerstone for its success within the Beaufort County community. No other secondary Montessori program exists within Beaufort County. Lowcountry Montessori School’s program is not only the pioneer for Montessori High School in Beaufort County, but it would also extended Montessori Secondary Education to the public sector.

Notice of Child Find

Upon request, Lowcountry Montessori School is required to evaluate a child for eligibility for special education services.  A request for evaluation is known as a referral.  When the school receives a referral, the school will appoint an Evaluation Planning team to determine if the child has a disability, and if the child needs special education services. The school locates, identifies, and evaluates all children with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in Lowcountry Montessori School.  This Child Find obligation is also fulfilled by the school’s posting of this information in a public location (website, school newsletter, school email letter) at least annually.

A school or district staff member who reasonably believes a child may be a child with a disability has a legal duty to refer the child, including a homeless child or a child advancing from grade to grade, to the school district in which the child is enrolled.  Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the child's parent that the referral will be made.

Others, including parents, who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability may also refer the child, including a homeless child or a child advancing from grade to grade, to the school or district in which the child is enrolled. Referrals must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability.  A referral may be made by contacting Becky Shaffer, Special Education Coordinator, at 843-322-0577.

For parents with children who are not currently enrolled in a school within the South Carolina Public Charter School District who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability may also refer the child, including a homeless child or a child advancing from grade to grade, to the child’s district of residence.  The contact information for the districts may be found at:  http://ed.sc.gov/schools/.
